However, if you want dramatic, jaw on the floor kind of views, whilst nature wraps itself 360 degrees around you in all its glory – then visit Guardians Peak. Wow. Not only is the setting one that you will find hard to leave, but the food and service is equally outstanding.

    Waterford Wine Estate

    Visiting Waterford Wine Estate is absolute bliss, driving down the estate road lined with citrus orchids you feel like you have been transported to another world. It is a complete unique experience with a Mediterranean feel, styled along the classic Bordeaux chateaus of France with a terracotta design. There is a tasting area inside with comfortable couches or outdoors on a spacious, tranquil stone veranda, both the perfect setting for a slow paced afternoon of fine quality wine tasting. The Chocolate and Wine Pairing is sensational and will definitely be a highlight. The estate offers a unique two-hour Wine Drive where you can sample their award winning wines in the vineyards in a safari type vehicle, while taking in the breathtaking views of the Helderberg Mountains.

    Dornier Wine Estate (Child-friendly)

    Dornier Wine Estate is family run boutique winery producing premium quality wines for the most discerned wine lover. Following traditional principals and inspired to perfection you can expect only the best from Dornier Wines. They produce contemporary wines pleasing to the modern day wine lover which clearly defines the region. The winery offers three ranges of wines which can be tasted in the Dornier Tasting Lounge.

    Bodega Restaurant, is a fine-dining restaurant serving gourmet food to perfection in a relaxed ambiance and it is child friendly. The restaurant has a lovely veranda where you can savour the picturesque views and enjoy a relaxed lunch at this stunning location. There is a play area for the little ones, next to the veranda, which you can see from the table or on a hot summer’s day they can play in the fountain in front of the restaurant.

    Lanzerac Wine Estate

    The classical elegant Lanzerac Estate, nestled in the foothills of Stellenbosch’s picturesque Jonkershoek Valley is steeped in history dating back to 1692. This beautiful 320-year-old wine Estate is the perfect combination of old-world charm and modern elegance rich in heritage. Lanzerac, with its classic Cape Dutch architecture, is one of those names synonymous with the Stellenbosch Winelands and is definitely one for the itinerary to experience its grand elegance, indulgent luxury and heritage.     Stark-Conde Wine Estate and Postcard Café

    This family run wine estate stole my heart with its breath taking beauty set in the Jonkershoek valley. It truly is a gem and well worth a visit to taste their fine wines, enjoy the beauty and dine at the picturesque Postcard Café.

  • Clos Malverne

    Clos Malverne is a family-run estate, located in the picturesque Devon Valley, where family commitment is its story of success. Clos Malverne is one of the few wineries in the world using a traditional handmade style of winemaking to produce their award-winning, elegant wines of distinction and complexity.

    Neethlingshof

    The long iconic pine tree avenue is one of the landmarks in Stellenbosch. As is the case with landmarks, you often drive past it’s comforting familiarity without actually visiting. Well, next time, be sure to make Neethlingshof your destination. The homestead, which houses the restaurant, is a beautifully preserved example of Cape Dutch Architecture. With its robust selection of wines, its warm and generous hospitality and its state-of-the-art restaurant and wine tasting centre.

    Jordan Wine Estate

    Jordan is a family run estate where passion and a unique terrior contribute to the production of world-class wines of distinction. There is a welcoming atmosphere as you arrive at the tasting room where you can relax on the terrace and admire the picturesque views over the lake while tasting their wines.

    Spier (Child-friendly)

    Spier is an iconic wine farm to visit that provides visitors with a memorable sensory experience. On the estate you will find a variety of entertainment. Award-winning wines can be tasted in their lovely tasting room with beautiful views of the Helderberg Mountains. Grape juice tasting is available for the kiddies. At Eight to go Deli you can create your own picnic or picnics can be pre-booked and enjoyed around the Spier dam that provides the perfect setting. There are plenty of trees for shade as well as a jungle gym to keep the little ones busy.

    Eagle Encounters offer the opportunity to experience the majestic birds of prey. At Eight Restaurant you can enjoy a farm-to-table experience serving fresh seasonal dishes. Spier Hotel provides 4 Star luxury accommodation. Spier has an extensive contemporary art collection supporting projects that acknowledge our African art heritage.     Thelema Mountain Vineyards

    The beautiful Thelema Mountain Vineyards, situated at the top of the Helshoogte Pass, has two farms and two different terriors from where they produce outstanding wines. Thelema, situated in Stellenbosch, was originally a run down fruit farm, and Sutherland, situated in Elgin, was an apple farm. All wines are bottled on the estate and can be tasted in the modern tasting room.

    Warwick Wine Estate is an outstanding family run wine estate, located in the beautiful Stellenbosch Winelands, producing award-winning wines.     Marianne Wine Estate (Child-friendly)

    The boutique winery Marianne Wine Estate in Stellenbosch is a hidden gem. It is French owned and the estate represents a modern initiative to produce French-style wines that honour both the South African terroir, and the 2000-year-old heritage of Bordeaux winemaking. French Oak barrels are imported to South Africa, constructed for the owner by the finest coopers in France. Marianne red wines are barrel-aged in new French oak for up to two years. Marianne releases nine Estate wines each with its own distinctive character. Click here to read more

    Simonsig Wine Estate

    Simonsig, named after its magnificent views of the Simonsberg Mountain, is one of South Africa’s most reputable wine estates and one of the founders of the Stellenbosch Wine Route. This family owned estate with a proud heritage upholds a legendary status in pioneering wine excellence with innovative and progressive expertise. They have an impressive list of outstanding, award-winning wines and sparkling wines to taste on their lovely shady veranda in summer or next to the cosy fireplace in winter. The staff is exceptionally friendly, informative and knowledgeable explaining all wines, as you taste. Simonsig was the first producer of Methode Cap Classique in South Africa, by founding member Frans Malan in 1971. Cellar tours are offered.   • Villiera Wines

    Villiera is a beautiful, family run estate to visit with a focus on sustainability and preserving the environment. They specialise in Cap Classique and are also well known for their Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. They have five MCC Sparkling Wines to taste and offer a Sparkling Wine and Nougat Pairing, a unique combination, and the compatibility is exceptional and enjoyable. Bookings are essential. They have lovely terrace for wine tasting shaded by beautiful old oak trees.

    Villiera have 220ha of land dedicate to a Wildlife Sanctuary and they offer a Game Drive Safari. The Safari takes two hours and you will be provided with informative information on the flora and fauna. In the Wildlife Sanctuary they have Springbok, Kudu, Giraffe, Bontebok, Eland, Gemsbok, Black Wildebeest, Bush Pig, Burchell’s Zebra, Duiker, Steenbuck, Grysbok and huge variety of bird life.   • Waterkloof Wine Estate

    Waterkloof Wine Estate was born in 2003 after a 10-year search by UK wine merchant Paul Boutinot for the perfect vineyard to produce fine wine. Situated on ‘top of a hill’ on the slopes of the Schapenberg, Waterkloof is recognised for their dedicated biodynamic approach and environmentally responsible farming. Waterkloof is one of the few estates to adopt biodynamic viticulture, combined with minimal intervention winemaking, allowing them to produce wines of vitality and a strong sense of origin. Waterkloof aim to produce ‘honest’ wines that truly express their unique site on the Schapenberg.     Uva Mira Mountain Vineyards

    This family owned boutique winery is a gem. Located on the slopes of Annandale Road in the Stellenbosch Winelands, right at the end (follow the signboards as the road splits) is very unique. Taste their award-winning outstanding handcrafted wines in the elevated tasting room and enjoy spectacular views of the Helderberg mountain range and ocean views across False Bay and Table Bay. Click here to read my blog

    Ernie Els Wines

    This has to be one of the best views in the Winelands, complemented with fantastic wines Ernie Els is definitely worth a visit. Wines can be sampled on the veranda while admiring the stunning view and there is a putting green where they host a fun chipping competition on the last Friday and Saturday of each month with great prizes up for grabs. There is a small menu serving light lunches including cheese and meat platters, but as we had just eaten lunch we didn’t get to taste the platters we saw coming out but they did look delicious.     The exquisite, stylish boutique winery Peter Falke Wines in Stellenbosch, nestled against the majestic slopes of the Helderberg Mountains is the perfect picturesque setting to this idyllic estate. Situated in my favourite area of the Stellenbosch Winelands known as the Golden Triangle for the unique location, growing climate and terrior for wine making with diverse soil types.     Rust en Vrede Wine Estate

    Rust en Vrede is a beautiful, historical wine estate set in the Stellenbosch Winelands on the majestic slopes of the Helderberg Mountains rich in history dating back 320 years. For the past 32 years they have been specialising in red wine with a focus on Shiraz, Cabernet and Merlot and have won numerous awards for their exceptional wines.

    Vergelegen Wine Estate (Child-friendly)

    Vergelegen is an impressive estate to visit. The exquisite gardens, historical Homestead and Library, ancient Camphor trees over 300 years old, spectacular views of the Hottentots Holland mountains, incredible kids play area, world-class restaurants and award winning wines all contribute to the wonderful, unique experience the estate offers. Rich in heritage with its first vineyards being planted in 1700 by Williem Adriaan van der Stel, it has been under the ownership of some of the world’s greatest explorers and visionaries. Sample their world-renowned handcrafted award winning wines in the Tasting Centre. Cellar Tours, Heritage and Garden Tours are offered daily. There are two outstanding restaurants, Stables is a more relaxed bistro near to the amazing play area and Camphors Restaurant is a fine dining experience. Picnics are available in summer from November to April.     Lourenford is one the oldest and most historic wine estates in the Cape Winelands being established in the year 1700. It was once part of Willem Adriaan van der Stel’s Vergelegen and is an outstanding Estate to visit nestled below the beautiful Helderberg and Hottentots Holland Mountains. Steeped in history and heritage, the estate also boasts an ultra-modern winery utilising technology unique in the Southern Hemisphere. The magnificent soils and diverse micro-climates create the ideal terroir for world-class wines. The property spans 4000 hectares of earth, bordered by the significant mountain ranges of the Helderberg and Hottentots Holland and 8 km from the ocean, all of which combine to give us the luxury of choice when it comes to picking the perfect terroir for planting.
