Marianne Wine Estate in Stellenbosch is a Hidden Gem

The boutique winery Marianne Wine Estate in Stellenbosch is a hidden gem and was a wonderful discovery. It is a winery with distinction for the fine things with a French twist. The Estate is French owned and named for the iconic, fictional French symbol of Liberty, Brotherhood, and Equality.

The estate represents a modern initiative to produce French-style wines that honour both the South African terroir, and the 2000-year-old heritage of Bordeaux winemaking. French Oak barrels are imported to South Africa, constructed for the owner by the finest coopers in France. Marianne red wines are barrel-aged in new French oak for up to two years.

We visited on a Friday evening without the kids only to discover it is welcoming to families and would be a great place to bring the kids on a sunny day where you can sit out on the lawn in front of the tasting room to enjoy your wine tasting next to the kid’s jungle gym. To add to the French experience, you can play a game of Boules.

The personal care you receive at Marianne is very welcoming and they will happily sit and chat with you about the estate, wines and wine making process fully explaining in detail, if this is what you enjoy. The friendly staff are very knowledgeable and we learnt a lot. They offer Cellar Tours, these need to be booked in advance. Cost is R50 and will take approximately 45minutes.

Marianne releases nine Estate wines each with its own distinctive character. They are all exceptional and we absolutely loved everyone we tasted. The Sauvignon Blanc is oak fermented and is a Sauvignon Blanc with a twist and French oak taste and the Rose is simply delicious. The Flagship wine Floreal is outstanding and was served at Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday, chosen by Gordon Ramsay to accompany his menu. The event was hosted by the Queen of England. For winter days you can enjoy your tasting next to the cosy fireplace.

To compliment your tasting they offer the finest Biltong and Wine Pairing which is ideal and consists of three red wines paired with beef, kudu and springbok biltong. Cost is R75 per person.

They offer a unique opportunity to Blend Your Own Wine Experience which is a 2-hour mixology experience were you will be able to make your very own bottle of wine blended from three varietals; Pinotage, Merlot & Shiraz and write your own label. The Marianne team will guide you through the experience providing all the information and a Cellar Tour. Cost is R300 per person.

Cheese and Meat Platters are available to order (cost is R120 / R150) and in summer Gourmet Picnics are available to pre-order.

Coming Soon… to the Tasting Room is a Creperie where you will be able to indulge in sweet and savoury Crepe’s to enhance the French experience and they will offer a Crepe and Wine Pairing Experience. I will post details once this is up and running. Kids will be able to enjoy a crepe of their own especially designed for them with all the yummy toppings they love.

Marianne Wine Estate is the perfect choice for the discerned wine lover, while not compromising family time. This is definitely one Estate you do not want to miss out on. I’m sure you will love it as much as I do.

I absolutely loved discovering Marianne Wine Estate and I can’t wait to return, with the kids next time. Thank you for a great evening.
