I love a glass of bubbly, or Methode Cap Classique Sparkling Wine if using the correct term, and I can highly recommend Villiera Wines and Simonsig Wine Estate to bubbly lovers with their outstanding MCC Sparkling Wines. These Estates are located in close proximity to each other in the Stellenbosch Winelands making it ideal to visit both on the same day 🙂
Villiera is a hidden gem! They specialise in Cap Classique and have five MCC Sparkling Wines to taste, some of the finest in the country, which I think, can rival the famous French Champagne. They offer a Sparkling Wine and Nougat Pairing, something very unique to experience and the compatibility is exceptional and enjoyable. Four MCC Sparkling Wines are paired with the Sally Williams nougat range. Bookings are essential. They also have an impressive list of award-winning wines to taste on their spacious terrace, shaded by beautiful old oak trees.
Villiera have 220ha of land dedicate to a Wildlife Sanctuary and they offer a Game Drive Safari. The Safari takes two hours and you will be provided with informative information on the flora and fauna. In the Wildlife Sanctuary they have Springbok, Kudu, Giraffe, Bontebok, Eland, Gemsbok, Black Wildebeest, Bush Pig, Burchell’s Zebra, Duiker, Steenbuck, Grysbok and huge variety of bird life. Bookings are essential.
Simonsig Wine Estate, named after the magnificent views of the Simonsberg Mountain, is not to be missed if you are a bubbly lover. Simonsig was the first producer of Methode Cap Classique in South Africa, by founding member Frans Malan in 1971 and their Sparking Wines have won numerous awards. The Kaapse Vonkel is heaven, and one of my favourites ☺. They have another two sparkling wines and a fantastic range of whites and reds to suit all palates. There is a lovely shady veranda for tasting in summer and a cosy fireplace if you are visiting in winter. The staff are exceptionally friendly, informative and knowledgeable.
Complimentary Cellar Tours are offered Monday to Saturday at 11am. Alternatively, book a private tour and enjoy a Tasting and Cellar Tour for R75 per person.
Cuvee Restaurant is their signature restaurant but I have not yet had the chance to try it out but I have read many reviews and it comes highly recommended. It is a fine dining experience, serving a seasonal menu using local produce.
I highly recommend an outing to Villiera Wines and Simonsig Wine Estate for the discerned bubbly lover 🙂
