The 300-year old Morgenster Estate is located in the beautiful Helderberg Wine Region in Somerset West and is a thriving blend of Italian and French culture. They are renowned for producing award-winning Bordeaux-styled red wines and the BEST extra virgin olive oil in the world.
Giulio Bertrand’s, the Italian owner, is acknowledged as the father of the modern olive oil industry in South Africa and was honoured by the SA Olive Association with a Life Time Achiever trophy for his contribution to the local olive oil industry.
Morgenster has 50 hectares of olive groves where a variety of cultivars are grown and processed in the historic building which was once the Estate’s wine cellar. Morgenster produces two internationally acclaimed Bordeaux style red blends, the flagship Morgenster label and the Lourens River Valley. Four Bordeaux cultivars are grown on the Estate, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Visitors can also enjoy three Italian Collection wines from the small Sangiovese and Nebbiolo vineyards.
My husband and I spent a relaxed afternoon at this wonderful estate tasting their fine wines and olive oils, followed by a romantic lunch at 95 at Morgenster. This was an idyllic way to spend an afternoon together, without the kids, enjoying the finest of the Cape Winelands and a unique experience.
We chose to sit outside on the vine-covered veranda, overlooking a lovely reed-lined dam and beautiful mountains, even though it was a little chilly the sun was shining and we could enjoy the beautiful views, making a wonderful setting for a lingering afternoon.
The welcoming tasting room has seating inside as well for cold winter days there is a cosy fireplace to warm you up while you enjoy your tasting experience and the delicious red wines warm you from the inside.
The staff are welcoming and knowledgeable and we were very well informed on all details of the tasting experience. The olive oil tasting is a unique and special experience, tasting the best olive oils.
There are five olive oils for tasting and one balsamic vinegar served with two olive tapenades and olives. First is the Monte Marcello Extra Virgin Olive Oil, named after the owner’s Italian property, presents sweet creamy flavours, toasted almonds and creamed honey. The Morgenster Extra Virgin Olive Oil is a blend of several Italian cultivars renowned for the excellent oil they produce. This oil is an intense concentration of fruit flavours that leaves you with a clean finish. The Don Carlo Extra Virgin Olive Oil is the most intense of the extra virgin olive oils in the Morgenster range and has an intense peppery flavour.
Next is the Lemon Enhanced Extra Virgin Olive Oil infused with lemon skin to create an oil perfect for salads. Lastly in the oils is the White Truffle Enhanced Extra Virgin Olive Oil. The White Truffle is imported from Italy and blended into Morgenster’s extra virgin olive oil and has an intense earthy nose and mushroom aroma, with the first aroma often associated with garlic. The Balsamic Vinegar is produced in Modena, Italy, using traditional methods.
The wines are outstanding, we loved the Italian Collection, Nabucco (100% Nebbiolo), the Caruso Rose (100% Sangiovese), the Flagship Morgenster Reserve Bordeaux Blend and the NU Series Sauvignon Blanc. We tasted five wines, and will need to go back to taste the rest!
NEW to Morgenster is the introduction of a Chocolate and Wine Pairing with the Italian Collection. The Caruso, a Sangiovese rosé, is paired with a lemon and cherry infused white chocolate. The Nabucco, a classic 100% Nebbiolo wine, is highlighted by orange zest in a 70% dark chocolate. The Tosca, a super Tuscan blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon is paired with two different chocolates, one is a 70% dark chocolate with cinnamon to enhance the spiciness of the wine and the other is a 70% dark chocolate with chilies to complement the warmth of the blend.
Visiting Morgenster Estate is a wonderful and unique experience I highly recommend to taste their award-winning wines and the most delicious olive oils in a beautiful, romantic setting.
