My family and I had a fun day out at Spier Wine Farm. We first went wine tasting and grape juice tasting with my two young boys. They were very excited to be a part of the experience (for a change). Then we went to visit Eagle Encounters on the farm.
The kids get three grape juices to taste and a colouring-in / activity sheet to keep them busy. The activity page highlights the important role insects play in the vineyards. There are 2 sparkling grape juices and one still. My boys absolutely loved this experience and being apart of the ‘wine tasting’.
For the big people there are three options for wine tasting. The Spier Tasting, consisting of a selection of three wines from the Spier Signature range, the Chocolate Tasting consisting of six wines paired with three chocolates and the Frans K.Smit Tasting of the estates top-tier, award winning wines consisting of six wines.
My husband and I chose the Chocolate Tasting, which was the perfect option for us. Our two favourite things paired together. The first chocolate is a Dark Malted Cherry Chocolate paired with Spier Creative Block 3 (a red blend) and their Signature Pinotage. Our favourite was the second, a White Cardamon and Passion Fruit Chocolate paired with Spier Creative Block 2 (a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon) and Spier Ideology Rielsing. Lastly was a White Peppered Plum Chocolate paired with Spier Method Cap Classique and Spier Signature Chardonnay / Pinot Noir. This was our least favourite as we didn’t like the chocolate although we did still enjoy the wine 🙂
Cheese and meat platters are also available to order.
Spier Tasting Prices:
Kids Grape Juice Tasting: R35 per tasting; Spier Signature range: R35 per tasting; Chocolate Tasting: R65 per tasting; Frans K.Smit Tasting: R90 per tasting
Next we visited Eagle Encounters. This was a wonderful, interactive learning experience for the boys and is a wonderful way for kids to experience the true magnificent of birds of prey while having lots of fun.
Eagle Encounters is a non-profit wildlife rehabilitation, conservation, education and eco-tourism centre based on the Spier Wine Farm. This is a rehabilitation centre for birds of prey that have been injured, poisoned, abused or hand-reared. Once they are fit and healthy and able to hunt and breed they are released back into the wild. Only hand-reared birds are kept for education purposes. Eagle Encounters has two missions: rehabilitation and education.
We arrived in time for the last interactive flying show which is a great opportunity for the kids to learn about the birds at the centre. Everyday there are four interactive shows at 11am, 2pm, 3pm and 4pm. In the Touching Gallery you will have the opportunity to personally meet African Wood Owls, Barn Owls and Spotted Eagle Owls. The Barn Owls even dance 🙂 They are absolutely adorable and I am sure they will steal your heart, like they did mine.
There are also numerous other animals including reptiles, Drogon the Bearded Dragon, leopard tortoises, rabbits, guinea pigs, a tree full of Cape Dwarf Chameleons, and a 2.5m Boa constrictor.
This is a fantastic, interactive educational experience for the little ones and wonderful way for them to experience the true magnificent of birds of prey while having lots of fun. See their website for full details on the shows to plan your visit.
This outing was a perfect combination of activities for the boys and the perfect length of time for an outing with little ones, a good balance of family fun for all.
