Wine Tasting at Eikendal Estate and Dining at Cucina Di Giovanni

My family and I visited Eikendal Wine Estate on a sunny autumn day for wine tasting and lunch at the restaurant on the Estate Cucina Di Giovanni. The Estate is set at the foot of the beautiful Helderberg Mountains creating the perfect backdrop.

On arrival we started with the wine tasting and to the kids delight they joined in with a Cookie Decorating and Tasting experience, which they absolutely loved. This is a brilliant way to keep the kids entertained while you enjoy a tasting experience of your own and something unique for them to enjoy. They also provide colouring-in pages and crayons for the little ones.

The Estate wines have won numerous awards worldwide. We tasted five wines, a Sauvignon Blanc, Rose, Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon / Merlot and the Flagship wine Classique – a blend of Merlot, Cab Sauv and Cab Franc. Our favourites were the Rose and Flagship wine, Classique. Cellar Tours can be arranged by appointment, cost is R45.

They do a Pizza and Wine Pairing which needs to be booked in advance. They are offering a Winter Special till the end of June on Tuesdays to Sundays between 12pm and 4pm which consisits of ham, olive & mushroom pizza paired with Pinotage, a Mexicana pizza paired with Shiraz and a Fillet & Avo pizza paired with Cabernet Sauvignon (there is a 20-minute waiting period as the pizzas are freshly prepared). Cost is R50 / person.

After our tasting we had lunch at the welcoming Cucina Di Giovanni, which is the perfect venue for a relaxed, family friendly lunch with the kids in the Winelands and serves tasty Italian food.

Set in the garden in front of the tasting room tables are spaciously scattered leaving plenty of room for the kids to run around. It is perfect for families with or without kids as there is so much space the lawn is not overly populated with tables so you don’t feel crowded and even though there are lots of kids it doesn’t feel crazy.

There is a good selection of dishes on the menu including pizza, pasta, risotto, seafood, meat, chicken and burgers. My husband ate a very delicious seafood risotto and I ate tender calamari and a caprese salad made to perfection. They have a great selection on the kid’s menu. My boys loved their thin based pizza and gourmet burger. For dessert we had the decadent and delicious chocolate brownie and cheesecake and I can highly recommend the cheescake but all the boys loved the brownie. The food was extremely appetizing and we left feeling content.

There is plenty to keep the little ones entertained including a wooden jungle gym with slide, monkey bars, fireman pole and swings as well as trees for climbing and open lawn space for the kids to play cricket, so bring a set along. The dam in front is low which created a great place for the kids to get muddy but kept them well entertained and they had a great time playing in there. Hopefully after winter it will be full again (and look like the featured image at the top!)

This was a great family outing I can highly recommend. My boys loved the cookie decorating and tasting and had an absolute ball running around, there was plenty to keep them entertained and other kids to play with while mom and dad had a relatively peaceful lunch, for parents with young kids that is a winner 🙂

Cucina Di Giovanni is a great family restaurant and would make an ideal location for celebrations with large groups and young children as there is plenty of space and the environment is perfect for kids. We will be back 🙂

Thank you to Eikendal Estate and Cucina di Giovanni for hosting my family and I, we had a fantastic time.
