Visiting Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens

0

If you haven’t yet explored the magnificent Kirstenbosch Gardens with the little ones or walked on the Tree Canopy Walkway or seen the amazing life sized Dinosaur Sculptures, then now is the time. This is a great family outing and the perfect place for our kids to learn and experience the best of nature, and plenty of space for them to run wild.

The Tree Canopy Walkway nicknamed ‘Boomslang’, meaning Tree Snake, has been designed in the shape of a snake’s skeleton and is a 130m long, curved walkway blending into the environment in natural colours. The Walkway takes you from ground level up above the treetops giving magnificent panoramic views of the Gardens and surrounding mountains. This a surreal and magical experience for the kids walking above the trees.

On exhibition in the Cycad Amphitheatre, and visible from ‘Boomslang’, is the amazing life sized Dinosaur Sculptures made from tin, to raise awareness of the threats faced by cycads and their possible extinction. They are sure to impress your little ones. There is also a Sculpture Garden of African stone sculptures.

The gardens are pram friendly, which I highly recommend for the young ones, as there is lots of walking to be done. My two-year old, who is hardly ever in the pram, spent the whole walk in it which was handy as the gardens are quite steep, and, as always a good place to stash all the goodies kids need. Pack in sufficient water.

If you are planning to eat in the gardens there are a few options. You are welcome to bring your own picnic. Chairs and umbrellas are not allowed. Picnic baskets can also be pre-ordered from the Kirstenbosch Tea Room or Moyo Restaurant.

If you prefer to eat at a restaurant Moyo is child friendly with a play area in front of the restaurant with a jungle gym in sand. It is an African themed restaurant serving breakfast, scones, muffins, lunch, and dinners on Friday. Situated near Gate 1. Bookings are recommended.

The Kirstenbosch Tea Room serves breakfast, lunches, salads, sandwiches, soups and sweet treats and will provide the kids with something to draw. Situated near Gate 2. Bookings are recommended.

Vida E Café is situated in the Visitors Centre at Gate 1 and is perfect for a quick sandwich, muffin or coffee.

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens is internationally acclaimed as one of the seven most magnificent botanical gardens in the world and was declared a World Heritage Site in 2004. Few gardens can match the pure magnificence of Kirstenbosch.

I would suggest being there early morning or late afternoon in summer due to the heat and expanse of the gardens to explore. The gardens total 528 hectares, don’t get lost.

Free parking is available at Gates 1,2 and 3
