Villiera MCC Sparkling Wines & Sally Williams Nougat
The bubbly pairing at Villiera Wine Estate is AMAZING!! Four MCC Sparkling Wines are paired with Sally Williams nougat and the compatibility is insanely delicious. Something unique and something you definitely need to experience!!
It is beautifully presented and your host will explain each pairing as he pours the bubbly. Once all the gasses are filled you are left to begin the decadent pairing experience. Slowly enjoying each sip as you pair it with a bite of delicious nougat. YUM. This was definitely my kind of tasting!
The first pairing is the Grier Brut paired with Sally Williams Almond and Cranberry Nougat. The Grier Brut is a fresher, lighter bubbly with a dry finish. It is a blend of Chardonnay and Maccabeu with a touch of Blanc de Noir which provides a hint of raspberry flavour. The fruity acidity of the cranberries balances the raspberry character of the bubbly, giving you a perfect pairing.
The second pairing is the Villiera Tradition Brut with Sally Williams Macadamia Nougat. This was my favourite!! Villiera Tradition is the fruitier of the bubblies and is soft and well rounded. It is a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinotage and the fruit and soft creamy flavour combines well with the sweetest of the nougats. The macadamias add a buttery, creamy aspect perfectly pairing together.
The third pairing is the Monro Brut with Almond Nougat. Monro Brut is the richest, mature bubbly in the Villiera range and it has yeasty and creamy with more nuttiness than the others due to the age. It is a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The nuttiness of the almonds in the nougat and the underlying marzipan character combines perfectly with the Monro Brut.
The fourth pairing is the Tradition Brut Rose with Sally Williams Turkish Delight (Rose). This was my least favourite pairing as I am not a fan of Turkish delight and found the flavour too strong BUT this is one of my favourite bubbly’s! I prefer it all on its own, it is delicious. My friend, however, loved this pairing! Tradition Rose is fruity and gives a sweeter impression. It is a blend of Pinotage, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay and the fruit combines ideally with the Turkish Delight. The Rosé colours also combines visually.
Wildlife Sanctuary / Game Drive Safari
The Villiera Game Drive was spectacular! Being so close to Cape Town and having the opportunity to escape into the bush for an afternoon was a welcome invitation to find ourselves amongst nature within minutes of jumping into the Safari vehicle. It was extremely relaxing, always a welcome feeling, and the reserve was a pleasant surprise to see the animals in their natural habitat, roaming freely and going about their day munching away. A highlight for me was being extremely close to the Giraffe’s and how comfortable they were with the presence of the Safari Vehicle.
The Villiera Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a large wildlife population of Springbok, Kudu, Giraffe, Bontebok, Eland, Gemsbok, Black Wildebeest, Bush Pig, Burchell’s Zebra, common Duiker, Steenbuck and Grysbok. In conjunction with two neighbours (The Cape Garden Centre and Wild Clover Farm) Villiera set aside 220ha of land as a wildlife sanctuary in 2009. It includes 12 dams plus marsh areas which attract a huge variety of bird-life. Thousands of indigenous trees have been donated by the Cape Garden Centre. By May 2015 100 000 trees had been planted in the reserve.
Our Safari guide was extremely knowledgeable and provided us with plenty of information about the animals and farm, and plenty of laughs along the way. The passion at Villiera is evident from the many projects they are involved in and the passion of the staff. From social responsibility, to environmental awareness and sustainability you will feel the value VIlliera puts into these very important matters.
Social Responsibility and Environmental Awareness
In 2010 Villiera Wines installed solar panels to supply all Villiera’s daytime requirements outside of harvest time. The farm has not sprayed insecticides for the past thirteen years and a flock of 1000 Peking ducks are responsible for some natural pest control.
There is a strong focus on water conservation, recycling and a greening project, which entails the planting of 1000’s of indigenous trees on the farm. This philosophy has led to a vibrant eco-system on the farm, including huge flocks of guinea fowl and pheasant as well as steenbok, Cape foxes, grey mongooses, porcupines and the threatened blue crane.
The farm has a daycare centre taking care of Villiera farm workers children and they are actively involved in the Pebbles Project a registered NPO that supports children, families and communities on the wine farms in and around Stellenbosch and Wellington, Citrusdal and in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. The work of Pebbles consists of five main pillars: education, health, nutrition, protection and community. There is a dental and medical facility on the farm to support the needs to the farm workers and community.
The game drive takes approximately two-hours. Booking is essential.
