Vergenoegd Wine Estate is a fantastic family destination in the Stellenbosch Winelands. It is easy to linger here all day with the family from the Duck Parade to a variety of Blending Experiences, Wine Tasting, Gourmet Picnics, delicious food, and plenty for kids to explore. A visit to the farm is a memorable experience.
My family and I had a wonderful day at the farm on a very windy day, Cape Town style! On arrival at the entrance we were met by the Movember Vergenoegd Ducks! Don’t let the unassuming entrance, down a dusty road deter you from the rustic charm that lies ahead. We arrived at 12pm for our Gourmet Picnic with the south-easter in full force so we decided to tuck into the shelter of the Manor House and sat at a table on the stoep with our two young boys. Here we where prefectly sheltered from the wind.
Picnics can be enjoyed on the farm’s peaceful lawns under ancient oak trees or at a table, if you prefer. Vergenoegd picnics are filled with plenty of gourmet delights and, if you choose to include a bottle of wine with your picnic you have the choice of Vergenoegd’s Runner Duck White, Rose or Red wine. They have kid’s picnics available too with a choice to include a suprise acitivity. Picnic blankets are available.
Our picnic basket was perfectly packed with a delicious selection of:
- Freshly baked ciabatta and flat bread
- Selection of cheeses and charcuterie
- Marinated olives
- Salmon pate
- Roasted vegetable cous cous salad
- Coleslaw salad
- Bacon, feta and red onion quiche
- Carrot cake with cream cheese frosting
- Delicious mixed roasted nuts
The food was delicious and we chose the Runner Duck Rose which perfectly complimented our picnic.
The Kid’s Picnic consits of:
- Ham and cheese croissant
- Juice box
At 12:30pm we watched the 1100 Indian Runner Ducks, with very long necks, do the cutest parade around the historic Manor House, much to the kid’s delight and once they have finished their parade the kids can feed them.
Ducks are a vital part of the Vergenoegd Experience and not only bring much joy and excitement to kids and visitors but are an essential part of the eco-friendly farming process. The Ducks assist in the farm’s natural pest-control consuming a surprising number of snails and bugs in the vineyards on their daily patrols. They are a big part of why Vergenoegd proudly carries the WWF Biodiversity Certification.
Thank you Vergenoegd for hosting my family and I, we had a wonderful Gourmet Picnic at the farm.
Duck Parade Times:
Monday to Friday: 9:45am | 3:30pm
Saturday, Sunday & Public Holidays 9:45am | 12:30pm | 3:30pm
Visitors can take a tour of the duck nursery and pens with Denzel, the duck farmer. He is wonderfully passionate and has a very important job on the farm managing the nursery. He explains the whole process from collecting the eggs, washing them, the incubation process, marking each egg, the hatching process and then looking after the little ducklings. There is a basic research and breeding program in place to keep the workforce of ducks productive, healthy and happy. This is highly informative.
