So… the Summer holidays have somehow arrived! Anyone know how that happened…?? If you are hanging around our beautiful city for the holidays and need some ideas how to keep the kids entertained here is my list of fun outings to do with the kids in and around Cape Town (where do I start…we are spoilt for choice… there is so much to do 🙂
Well its Summer Time, and time for Sun, Sea, Sand, Sandcastles and Ice Cream! Yay 🙂 Nothing beats a day at the beach with the kids and we are spoilt for choice! Some of my favourite child friendly beaches are Boulders Beach, St James, Clifton 4th and Camps Bay. Read my article here.

Take the kids up the Cableway and enjoy spectacular views of the BEST city in the world. Then head to Café Paradiso, an awesome family friendly café located in trendy Kloof Street in the CBD where the kids can make their own pizza or cookies while you enjoy a meal.
Stroll through the Company’s Garden, laugh at the adorable squirrels and enjoy a meal at the child-friendly Company’s Garden Restaurant. Please note the Planetarium is CLOSED for maintenance.
Green Point Urban Park
The best play park in Cape Town is located next to the famous Cape Town Stadium where you will find Green Point Urban Park and Biodiversity Garden. This is the perfect place for the little ones to play and release their energy and it is suitable for all ages. There are two different play areas to choose from divided into the Tot-Lot Play Area suitable for ages 1 – 6, which is fenced, and the Adventure Play Park suitable for kid’s age 7 – 16.
Ride on the iconic Blue Train and let the kids run wild in the huge play park and play a game of Putt-Putt on the Promenade.
Deer Park Café in Vredehoek
Enjoy a meal at the lovely child-friendly Deer Park Cafe and let the kids play in the Rocklands Road Park.
The Rumbullion / Roundhouse
If you have visitors from overseas and you would like to spoil them with a gorgeous view take them for a casual lunch at The Rumbullion. There is no play area for kids but you can enjoy a picnic on the lawn and there is space for the kids to play, while you enjoy the view across Camps Bay and the Twelve Apostles. You do not need to reserve a picnic as the menu is tick box style but you do need to book in advance.
Take the kids for a scenic tour of Cape Town on the open top, double-decker red bus. There is great fun for kids. There are 2 routes to choose from both departing from V&A Waterfront. The Red Route goes via Camps Bay and the Blue Route via Kirstenbosch Gardens. Plan your route ahead of time and either enjoy a stop at Camps Bay beach or explore the magnificent Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. Click to read my article.
City Sightseeing Boat
The City Sightseeing Boat departs every 20 minutes from the jetty outside the Two Oceans Aquarium at the V&A Waterfront and takes you on a 25-minute harbour cruise. Perfect for the little ones. There is even an audio commentary channel for kids!
There is plenty of entertainment for kids at the Waterfront with two plays areas at the Shopping Wharf and Clock Tower. You can take the kids for a harbour cruise, go on the Cape Wheel, visit Scratch Patch, play mini golf at Cave Golf, or ride on the Hamley’s Train. The Jolly Roger Pirate Boat is hugely popular with kids, they will love the Pirate show! PLUS the V&A Waterfront have a full Holiday Entertainment Programme for our little ones. Read more here.
Visit the Two Oceans Aquarium at the V&A Waterfront and watch a puppet show on three times a day at 10:30am, 1:30pm or 4pm; then enjoy a harbour cruise on the City Sightseeing Boat, departs from the jetty outside the Aquarium every 20 minutes.
SOUTHERN Suburbs Outings
The Cape Town Science Centre
A fantastic outing for kids! It is a brilliant way for kids to experience Science in an entertaining and educational environment with over 250 hands-on exhibits and mind-boggling puzzles. There is so much to see and do your kids will be kept busy for hours having fun while being in a learning environment. There is a café for snacks and light meals and they have a holiday programme with various fun shows and interactive classes. Read more here.
Take the kids on an adventure at Acrobranch, a fun outdoor obstacle and activity course for kids, teenagers and adults that takes you through the Constantia Nek forest on swinging bridges, ziplines, Tarzan swings and treetop adventures. This is a great way to get the kids active outdoors and enjoying nature.
The Bike Park at Constantia Uitsig
The Bike Park offers cyclists of all ages and skill levels laps and laps of fun. Featuring a variety of cross-country track stretching 3.5 kms through indigenous vegetation and scenic Constantia, there are beginner jump lines all the way to expert drop-offs, rock gardens, a wooden berm, rollers and a suspension sky bridge (that tracks the canopy of the trees) ending in a corkscrew exit.
Clay Café in Hout Bay
Great fun for kids making their pottery masterpieces and there is a play are outside.
Visit historic Groot Constantia Wine Estate and enjoy a meal at Jonkershuis Bistro.
Walk on the Tree Canopy Walkway and see the life-sized Dinosaur sculptures made from tin; dine at child-friendly Moyo which has a lovely play area for the little ones, or bring your own picnic.
Penguins @ Boulders Beach
Boulders beach is home to an endangered colony of the cutest African Penguins, one of the only colonies in the world, it’s impossible not to fall in love with these adorable waddling webbed birds. Boulders beach forms part of Table Mountain National Park and consists of three pristine beaches. It is a wonderful beach for children as the massive boulders protect the waters from wind, waves and currents and provides a calm swimming environment. The water is also warmer and you will find small rock pools and sandy coves to explore, perfect for the little ones to play in.
Be a tourist for a day and take the kids sightseeing to visit this World Heritage Site located 60km south west of Cape Town at the tip of the Cape Peninsula in the Table Mountain National Park. Take the kids on the Flying Dutchman Funicular to the Lighthouse and explore the majestic beauty of this National Park.
Blue Water Café is a family fun café serving tasty breakfasts and wood-fired pizzas with spectacular mountain and oceans views overlooking Noordhoek Beach. The restaurant is set in a lovely secure garden for the little ones to play in and has a magical faraway tree with tree house, a slide and jungle gym.
Higgledy Piggeldy Farmyard is located right next to the restaurant with an entrance from the garden. The farmyard is one of the best petting zoos I have seen. It is amazing and huge with lots of animals to pet and feed. The kids will absolutely love it. Mine did and we spent ages feeding the animal and having a good laugh at some of them too.
At Imhoff Farm you will also find a Snake Park, Maze World, an Equestrian Centre, and Camel riding!!
Dunes Restaurant is a lovely seaside restaurant which has a play area in sand or take the kids on a Seal Island Tour departing from the Hout Bay Harbour.
World of Birds is set in a tropical garden there are over 3000 birds and small animals to view of 400 different species. You can watch the penguins, pelicans or birds of prey being fed or have a personal encounter with a monkey. The cheeky squirrel monkeys provide plenty of entertainment, the kids will absolutely love this experience. The Monkey Jungle is open from 11:30am to 1pm, and 2 to 3:30pm.
NORTHERN Suburbs Outings
Open 25 -27 November and 2 December – 10 January. Enjoy some thrilling rides at this outdoor Theme Park with over 30 attractions and 23 rides ranging from roller coasters to carousels, rides suitable for the whole family and kids of all ages.
This is tons of fun for all riding downhill on a sled at an outdoor toboggan track, the only one in Africa! If you are looking for somewhere to have a meal head to nearby Willowbridge which has various options from Ou Meel Bakery, Woolies Café, Col’Cacchio and Primi Piati all set in a courtyard with wooden jungle gyms.
Bugs Play Park
Bugz Play Park has a huge outdoor playground includes a train ride, quad bikes, rowing boats, jungle gyms, water slides, swing horses, horse rides, peddle carts, worm train, toddler tractors and a sand area for the little ones. The indoor area is suitable for children from 2 -10 and includes jumping castles, jungle gyms, slides, playhouses and a castle. Open daily from 9am – 5pm.
Grand West Casino
The Ice Station is an Olympic sized indoor skating rink, a world-class facility and there is a mini supervised ice skating rink for under 5 year olds. Go Ten Pin Bowling at the state-of-the-art ten-pin bowling alley providing outstanding entertainment for a family outing.
Giraffe House is a lovely animal experience for kids and lots of fun for the whole family. Be sure to check the times of their interactive shows and plan your visit. This is a great fun! For lunch head to Weltevreden Wine Estate and let the kids run wild at Carnival.
Drakenstein Lion Park is home to rescued lions from abusive situations and is an incredible sanctuary providing lifetime care in a safe environment and providing the animals with compassion and the respect they deserve. This is a fantastic experience while supporting an very worthwhile cause. For lunch visit the Spice Route and enjoy some delicious pizza at the child friendly La Grapperia.
Set in a tropical garden, there are also reptiles, monkeys and more. Then visit Marianne Wine Estate and enjoy lunch at child-friendly Floreal Brasserie and for dessert let the kids eat Crepes in the Tasting Room while you enjoy tasting Marianne’s outstanding wines.

Spier is a fantastic destination in the Stellebosch Winelands for families. Enjoy a Gourmet Picnic (which needs to be pre-booked) or create your own picnic at Eight to Go Deli. Enjoy some wine tasting in the Tasting Lounge while the little ones do a Grape Juice Tasting. Then visit Eagle Encounters, a non-profit wildlife rehabilitation, conservation, education and eco-tourism centre. There are four interactive shows daily at 11am, 2pm, 3pm and 4pm.
Perfect for a relaxed afternoon of wine and gourmet pizza, play a game of Boules while the kids play on the jungle gym.
Vergelgen is a world-class estate, an estate like no other, it is sure to captivate your heart with its breath-taking beauty, excellence and welcoming atmosphere. Enjoy a meal at child friendly Stables Bistro, let the kids play in the incredible play area, and take a wander through the beautiful landscaped gardens.
Enjoy a great family outing to this estate, let the kids join in on some wine tasting with a grape juice tasting, enjoy a meal at the lovely, child-friendly Millhouse Kitchen. If you are visiting on a Sunday pop into the Lourensford Harvest Market. They have fun fair rides for the kids and a train that takes you on a ride through the vineyards.
The exquisite, child friendly Mont Marie was an absolute gem to discover and is definitely worth a visit. It’s rare to find such a stylish child friendly restaurant. The restaurant overlooks a dam and hosts an amazing enclosed kids play area. From the moment you arrive you will feel the magnificence of this outstanding venue.
The charming Tokara Delicatessen on the beautiful Tokara Wine Estate is a lovely child friendly deli for a casual breakfast or lunch with the family with scenic views of the Simonsberg Mountains, olive groves and vineyards. For the children they have a natural wood jungle gym, slide and sandpit in front of the restaurant so you can watch your kids at all times from the veranda tables. For little ones they have baskets of toys for them to play with at the tables.
Bodega Restaurant at Dornier Wine Estate
Bodega Restaurant is a fantastic restaurants to visit for lunch with the family serving excellent quality food in a relaxed family environment. The veranda is the perfect place to enjoy a meal and take in the stunning scenery. There is a play area next to the restaurant and they have an excellent children’s menu.
Vergenoegd Wine Estate
Vergenoegd Wine Estate is a fantastic family destination in the Stellenbosch Winelands. There is plenty of entertainment for kids and families to keep them busy, it is easy to linger here all day from the Duck Parade, Duck Tour and feeding the ducks, Gourmet Picnics at the dam and every Saturday they have the Market @ Vergenoegd from 10am – 4pm. In the Manor House there is a playroom.
Laborie Wine Estate
Laborie Estate is welcoming to families with plenty of entertainment on the farm for all and they have ensured our little people are well cared for with activities to keep them busy while you visit this world-class Winelands destination. Kids can join in on the tasting experience at Taste with a Grape juice tasting; and enjoy a meal at the child-friendly Harvest at Laborie, which has a lovely, natural wood jungle gym and slide and beautiful lawns in front of the restaurant providing lots of space for play.
Under Oaks Pizzeria
Under Oaks Wine Estate is a Paarl gem! It is a beautiful, child friendly estate to visit with the family for delicious pizza and wine. The farm setting has picturesque views for you to savour as you spend a relaxed afternoon at this lovely location. There is a jungle gym, swings and farm animals to keep the little ones entertained watching the cows and horses roam around and plenty of space for the little ones to run and play and just be kids.
The Franschhoek Wine Valley
Leopard’s Leap is a fantastic restaurant for a family lunch or enjoy a day on the Franschhoek Wine Tram, OK, this is a little more for the adults, but also great fun for kids. Read my article for full details.

Looking for somewhere for the kids to burn off energy! Try Jump Around in Paarden Eiland, Rush in Claremont or beUP Park in Pinelands.
