Ok friends, do you want to fly? This is it! This is your opportunity.
It is crazy, insane, amazing!! And it is not actually scary. Well you might not believe me, but I did do it twice! Lucky me, after my first ‘flight’ I was given the opportunity to ‘fly’ again. I was a little nervous the first time but let me put you at ease, it is easier than you imagine and more enjoyable that imaginable 🙂
I was surprised at how quickly it all happens. You arrive at your allocated time, which you need to be a little flexible with as this is all weather and wind dependant. After your arrival you sign the required indemnity form. Then your helmet gets strapped on your head, you put a pack on your back, get told the very simple instructions which basically involves ‘just run, don’t jump or sit’, and then you wait for the command and run. That’s it! In a few seconds you are in the air, trying to figure out what just happened and then you float, and your jaw drops at the pure beauty of gorgeous Cape Town. It is really as simple as that friends. The flight is smooth. I couldn’t wipe the silly grin off my face, as I saw in the GoPro video which records the whole event for you, to watch over and over and over. Amazing 🙂
The pilots are amazing, professional and never did I question my safety. I even got the chance to take on the reigns and ‘drive’ for a little while. The landing was so easy and smooth all you do is stand up. I promise it is as simple as that. Once you have descent you glide along the ground and come to slow stop, stand up and you are back on two feet.
There are two sites you will fly from in Cape Town – either Lions Head or Signal Hill, depending on the weather. The flight will take anything between 5 to 30 minutes, once again all weather dependant. Cape Town Tandem Paragliding fly all year from dawn to dusk, as long as the wind permits. No experience is required and there are, almost, no limitations or restrictions and people with disabilities can take part. Kids from age 5 can fly (but need to weigh more than 20kg’s). Once the flight is over you will be transported back to where you took off from.
Wear closed shoes, preferably trainers and depending on the weather, take a jacket or wind breaker, in case. I would not recommend taking your own camera or phone. Rather buy the GoPro video and photos they offer.
An absolutely amazing experience I can completely recommend everyone MUST experience. I promise it is easy, safe and enjoyable. Ok, the thought of running off Signal Hill might go against all human instinct but it is not actually like that at all. You are in the air quickly and it is so surreal and incredible. Don’t let fear keep you from experiencing this. Step out and don’t miss out 🙂
