While on a luxurious night away in Franschhoek having a wonderful, relaxed day on the Wine Tram we stopped in at the elegant Grande Provence for lunch at the Restaurant.
The restaurant provides a fine-dining experience of sophistication and elegance with an industrial chic presence, crisp white table clothes and polished cutlery. We chose to sit inside the restaurant on the lush, high back chairs upholstered in white leather next to the fireplace. There are glass doors along one side of the restaurant leading out on to the courtyard which provide plenty of light. There is also seating outside for sunny days, if you prefer, to admire the Sculpture Garden and picturesque mountain and vineyard views.
The menu exudes culinary excellence inspired by the precision of French cuisine combined with Asian flavours and local ingredients. The food is well-presented with a creative element and a variety of textures are incorporated to complete the dish. The menu options include an A-la carte and set menu and a Degustation menu is also available for dinner only paired with wine. We chose to order from the A-la carte menu.
For starters we shared the BBQ lobster with quinoa sea sand and the Goats cheese croquette with pickled baby beets and candied estate figs. The lobster was definitely our favourite, it was delicious.
For mains I chose the vegetarian option, ‘Fools Truffles’, as it sounded very intriguing and I was curious to see how it presented. It consists of a carrot and pine nut purée, charred cauliflower gratin, baked Rosa tomatoes, radish and popcorn! An original and unusual dish but enjoyable and the popcorn added an interesting element and texture to compliment and blend the flavours. Hubby had the slow cooked Beef cheek which he said was cooked to perfection and delicious.
Dessert was extravagant and delicious with original presentation on both desserts. Hubby had the hot chocolate fondant dessert and I chose the ‘Chocolate Forest’, resembling a forest 🙂 This was another interesting combination on flavours with vanilla-poached forest mushrooms but it was absolutely delicious and disappeared too quickly.
The service is exceptional and professional and the restaurant provides a relaxed ambiance. All wines where paired with outstanding estate wines to compliment the meal. We enjoyed a wonderful lunch, completing the exceptional experience in the Gourmet Capital.
After lunch we enjoyed a stroll around the stunning estate enjoying the beautiful Sculpture Garden and Art Gallery.
Rustic French-Styled Picnics can be enjoyed on the lawns in the picnic area with a jungle gym, ideal for families and perfectly positioned a little distance away from the Restaurant so kids can run wild.
Picnics are available from November to April and includes a bottle of the Angel Tears wine. Cost is R275 per person sharing or R325 for an individual basket. Picnics need to be pre-booked 24 hours in advance.
