Get creative at this awesome kids party venue in Cape Town

Canvas Club Rondebosch recently hosted our daughter’s birthday party. As far as parties go, this was one of the most hassle-free parties I’ve ever had to organise, which counts quite highly in my books! Not only was it hassle free, it was wonderfully organised, beautifully set-up and best of all, super stimulating, creative and fun for the children.

Marie, the owner, is a qualified primary school teacher with a background in musical theatre, dance and production design. Marie evidently loves children and is very skilled at working with groups of excitable children. My daughter chose to have a princess party so the girls made princess crowns and wands whilst the boys made prince crowns and sceptres. The children were fully engaged for the 45minute period of doing the activity, after which we cut the cake. Once the children had finished eating, Marie organised a game of musical statues and set up several sensory play stations. There is ample space outside the arts and crafts room for the children to move around and the property is fully enclosed and protected from the street. Very helpfully, there is a separate room where parents can have tea/coffee/snacks, which is up to the parents to organise.

Marie offers three party packages to suit all budgets.

  1. ‘Keep it cool’ for 1 hour at R100 a child – includes creating a craft you can take home, a dedicated crafting instructor, materials and tools, digital invitation, choose your own theme.
  2. ‘Live a little’ for 1.5 hours at R200 a child – as above but also includes fun party games and you can bring your own cake and drinks
  3. ‘The splurge’ for 2 hours at R400 a child – as with option one but with a party bag included, fun games, balloons and decorations, birthday cake/cupcakes, drinks for the kids.

Parties can take place at your venue of choice, or at the Canvas Club venue in Rondebosch, which is situated in the Cape Town Museum of Childhood (opening 2020).

What I really valued about this party venue is the fact that it was a private space, rather than a large noisy venue where there are usually numerous parties happening at once. I find children could potentially become quite over-stimulated in those settings and struggle to connect and play with each other. The parents also spend their time rushing around trying to keep an eye on the children. Canvas Club really impressed me, not just with the professionalism, the child-centred skilled focus and the enjoyment the children got from being creative, but with the safe and intimate space it created for celebrating our daughter.
