Family Dining at Jonkershuis Restaurant at Groot Constantia Wine Estate

Jonkershuis Restaurant is located on the beautiful, historic Groot Constantia wine estate, nestled in the lush Constantia Valley. This relaxed eatery, surrounded by ancient oak trees, is a lovely family restaurant to visit with the kids. It hits the nail on the head in all departments for me with delicious food, beautiful views, excellent service and family friendly, including the furry ones too. Doggy bowls of water are provided and there are lots of furry friends, much to my two-year olds delight (on leads though if you have a little one who is frightened).

Although there is no play area or jungle gym for the kids the lawns in front of the restaurant provides plenty of space creating an environment where all kids come together and play, run, chase and have old school fun. There were lots of kids running around playing games, chasing each other, hiding behinds trees and kicking a ball (so bring one along if you want). My kids had a great time. The atmosphere is very relaxed making a perfect child friendly environment.

Their food reflects the Cape Malay heritage and culture and is of the highest quality and outstanding. Chefs source daily fresh and sustainable produce. They have very creative, tasty healthy options too including a superfood breakfast and salad. On the lunch menu there is a tasty selection of salads, cheese or meat platters, bistro meals, Cape Malay specialities and daily chef’s specials. There is a special kids menu plus a mouth-watering selection of decadent desserts and a gluten free option. There is definitely something for all appetites.

The restaurant is spacious with seating inside, outside and on the veranda. If you have the little ones I recommend to book a table on the front lawns, which is ideal, and is where we sat. If you are looking for a romantic setting you can sit inside or if you prefer a casual setting you can sit in their vine-covered courtyard. They have good quality high chairs too.

The service was excellent, efficient and friendly and our waiter was very loving, patient and attentive to our very demanding two-year old. She brought cushions to make him more comfortable and some colouring in pages and crayons for our older boy too.

After your meal enjoy a walk around the historic estate and visit Simon’s Deli to collect some estate wine and gourmet deli delights before you head home.

Groot Constantia is a memorable wine farm to visit and South Africa’s oldest wine producing estate. It is a National Monument and a living museum preserving the history of the South African wine industry and have been producing handcrafted wine since 1685.
