The kids, hubby and I where super excited for a picnic outing with a difference at Solms Delta Wine Estate. Tractor rides, forest adventures, river fun and a gourmet picnic was what was install for the day.
We arrived around midday on Sunday at Solms Delta Wine Estate, located off the R45 as you are driving towards Franschhoek. On arrival at the Estate follow the signs for the Wijn van de Caab Tasting Room (not the Restaurant). Here you will collect your picnic basket, please note picnics are freshly prepared, so there may be a short delay on arrival. While waiting for your basket, enjoy a wine tasting to select and purchase your wine of choice for the day as wine is not included in the picnic, and the picnic area is not serviced. Be sure to purchase all drinks needed for the day at the Tasting Room before heading off to the forest. There is a large bottle of sparkling water included in the picnic and juice boxes for the kids. After a wine tasting we chose the delicious Chenin Blanc, not our usual choice of wine but it was outstanding, fresh and crisp and full of ripe summer fruit flavours.
As we were there on a Sunday we got to enjoy a tractor ride to the picnic area. It is only a 5-minute walk from the Tasting Room on the days there is no tractor ride. Ask for directions before heading off and tips to find the best picnic spot as entering the forest for the first time might leave you a little lost for which direction to head in. We asked our tractor driver where to find the best spot and he gave us directions into the forest.
The picnic area is in a cool enchanted forest on the farm, next to the river, perfect for a hot summers day. We found a lovely secluded spot next to the river where we setup our picnic on the sandy shores (no grass here). It was so lovely and cool in the forest, it is the ideal spot to escape the summer’s heat. The kids played in the shallow water of the river, ideal for our little guy as he can’t swim yet and they could walk around, play and keep cool.
There is a grassed area if this is your preference, but it is not as cool as the forest and it is not next to the river or you can picnic next to the dam.
THINGS TO REMEMBER:
- Pack in the cossies and towels to cool off in the river.
- Bring your own picnic blankets, and chairs if you prefer.
- Tractor rides are available on Saturday and Sundays ONLY to the picnic area.
We decided to pre-order a Vegetarian Picnic. It was delicious and consisted of:
- Open fire baked bread with wild rosemary butter
- Dalewood Camembert and Wild Melon Preserve
- Marinated Vegetable with Wild Herb Pesto Wrap
- Chickpea Salad
- Garden Leaf Salad
- Roasted Potato, Onion, Wholegrain Mustard Salad
- Ginger Pudding
- Lemon Pelargonium Creamed Cheese Mousse
- 750ML Sparkling Water
The kids picnic consisted of:
- Crumbed chicken strips with chips
- Ginger Pudding
- Juice box
There are toilets in the forest picnic area, discreetly hidden in amongst the trees, but easy to find and well signed.
The Wijn van de Caab Tasting Room is open seven days a week from 9am to 5pm. Wine tasting takes place in the tasting room or under the oaks on the expansive lawns.
Visit the Music van de Caab Centre, the exhibition centres on a journey through Cape musical influences and history.
Thank you Solms Delta for a lovely day at the farm.
