Eagle Encounters at Spier Wine Estate

0

Eagle Encounters is a non-profit wildlife rehabilitation, conservation, education and eco-tourism centre based on the Spier Wine Farm. This is a rehabilitation centre for birds of prey that have been injured, poisoned, abused or hand-reared. Once they are fit and healthy and able to hunt and breed they are released back into the wild. Only hand-reared birds are kept for education purposes. Eagle Encounters has two missions: rehabilitation and education.

Everyday there are four interactive shows at 11am, 2pm, 3pm and 4pm. In the Touching Gallery you will have the opportunity to personally meet African Wood Owls, Barn Owls and Spotted Eagle Owls. The Barn Owls even dance 🙂 They are totally adorable and I am sure they will steal your heart, like they did mine.

There are also numerous other animals including reptiles, Drogon the Bearded Dragon, leopard tortoises, rabbits, guinea pigs, a tree full of Cape Dwarf Chameleons, and a 2.5m Boa constrictor.

At Eagle Encounters you can get up close and personal with an Eagle and have a personal encounter with an Eagle and experience the power of this majestic bird. A special encounter with Wally, the friendly Wahlberg’s Eagle will cost R30 / person and to meet Leo, a majestic Verreaux’s Eagle will cost R50 / person.

Birds of prey are a crucial part in maintaining the balance of the farm’s ecosystem. The birds allow Spier to do pest control naturally allowing the land to be farmed as sensitively as possible without the use of poisons. They perform the following functions:

  • clean up organic remains helping prevent disease
  • small Falcons keep locust, cricket and grasshopper populations in check which can destroy crops
  • Barn owls consumes rodents like rat and mice which cause damage and soil erosion
  • Raptors also help keep the number of seed-eating birds like guinea fowls and doves under control
  • African Goshawks prey on starlings making sure they do not consume too many insects which help to pollinate crops and are a source of food for other birds

This is a fantastic interactive learning experience for the little ones and wonderful way for them to experience the true magnificent of birds of prey while having lots of fun.
