The West Coast has been under-represented on our website when it comes to weekend breaks and holiday destinations. It’s time to change that. It is an area with the most unique charm, starting with the mirror-like quality of the sea in places like Paternoster, the down-to-earth nature of the people, the wide-open horizons and powdery white beaches. There is a very unique peacefulness in the area with its wonderful blend of salty sea-air and strandveld vegetation.
We recently had the privilege of staying in Jacobs Bay – a quiet fishing village built around a serene bay. We stayed in Dunstone Beach House – arguably occupying the most tranquil and private spot in the whole area. The luxury self-catering house has panoramic and expansive seaviews. It is situated on an outcrop between two bays, resulting in each side of the house having a different seaview. There is an intense sense of privacy and connection with nature in this very special property. I particularly fell in love with the silence, only punctuated by the sounds of the sea and the seagulls.
When you sit in the comfort of the lounge or at the dining-room table, you feel part of the surrounds given that you step right onto the dune from the veranda. The smell of the sea and vegetation permeates the house and every window frames a different view of nature at its finest. One side of the house overlooks what feels like your own private beach (we only saw two other people on it the entire weekend). We enjoyed several walks, saw stunning sunsets and even took a dip in the fairly cold water (it is the West Coast after all!). There is an indoor braai, which would also double-up as a cosy fireplace on a crisp winters’ day.
The property is very child friendly with a good selection of beach toys and unrivalled access to the sand dunes, rock pools and the beach. Two double bedrooms in the main house are generous and extremely comfortable with stunning views. The third (loft) room in the main house is perfect for children and they will no doubt enjoy the freedom of having their own space upstairs. There is access to a cot if needed.
The property has a second self-contained unit downstairs with a generous open-plan lounge and kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. This property caters well for several families wanting to holiday together without necessarily being in the same space all the time. The downstairs unit has its own built-in braai outside. There is also a table-tennis table in the garage for older children.
Dunstone House offers the kind of weekend/holiday destination that would completely restore body, mind and soul. It offers a very safe space for your children to enjoy the outdoors, for friends and family to connect in comfort and incredible beauty and to indulge in the special brand of restoration only nature can offer.
I am pretty sure after just one visit, this property would soon become your home-away-from-home destination on the West Coast. The school holidays are almost upon us, shortly followed by Easter weekend. To secure your place, contact Abbi on abbi@dunstone.co.za.
