Child Friendly Breakfast Spots in Cape Town

If you are heading out for breakfast with the kids this weekend here are some of my favourite places to go in the CBD, Atlantic Seaboard, Southern Suburbs, Northern Suburbs and  Stellenbosch Winelands:

Deer Park Café

This lovely café is idyllically located on the scenic slopes of Table Mountain under our majestic mountain providing that spectacular view we love so much. The café has a trendy vibe to it with large windows creating a very light and airy space. The café is located next to Rocklands Road public park making it ideal for families with a large, secure play park for the little ones to run wild. It is old school, reminding me of my youth, with those frighteningly high (for mom and dad that is) stand-alone metal slides (do you remember what I am talking about?). My kids absolutely love it and it is super speedy so watch out mom and dad, they come flying down. There is also the old school metal jungle gym (the modern ones all tend to be wooden), and the old school merry-go-round, and two wooden jungle gyms and two sets of swings. It’s a great play area and great location to hang out with the kids after your meal. The breakfast menu covers all appetites from healthy options, the best eggs benedict to homemade bran muffins and French toast. They have a great children’s menu too and freshly squeezed juices are made to order.

Company’s Garden Restaurant

I love visiting the historical Company’s Garden with the kids to have a meal at the Company’s Garden Restaurant and take a walk through the gardens and laugh at the adorable friendly squirrels. The Company Garden’s is a park and heritage site set in the heart of the CBD. The Company’s Garden Restaurant is inspired by its natural surroundings and there is an enchanting feel to this causal, family friendly restaurant where kids can play in human sized weaved bird nests or on carved animals while you eat and keep an eye on them. They serve a selection of hearty breakfasts, light meals and authentic South African and Cape cuisine. Open daily 7am – 6pm.

Die Damhuis

Set in a historical building at Melkbos Beach Die Damhuis is the ideal beach café and family restaurant. If you are looking for a child friendly restaurant with scenic ocean views and tasty food next to the beach this is the one. There is a lovely relaxed atmosphere and beach feel to this café. For the kids there is a well themed wooden lighthouse with a slide and a wooden sailboat for them to play on set in sand, with a marquee over the boat for shade and protection from the sun, make this a great play area for kids of all ages. There are plenty of beach toys for them to play with in the sand. The tables outside at the back of the restaurant near the play area are in the sand so they can play right next to you. This is the perfect choice for kids of all ages. Once you have finished your meal enjoy a leisurely stroll on the beach with the kids.

Blue Water Café at Imhoff Farm Kommetjie

The Blue Water Café is a lovely, relaxed family friendly café and the perfect place for breakfast with the family. The restaurant is set in a lovely, secure garden so mom and dad can actually relax, a little while the little ones play. The restaurant has spectacular, picturesque oceans views overlooking Noordhoek Beach.

For the little ones they have a fairy-tale, Magical Faraway Tree, with a treehouse and slide. This is really special and I have not seen something like this anywhere else. Great fun for the kids to climb up into the tree and play. There is also a jungle gym and swings and animals in the fields in front of the restaurant. Higgeldy Piggeldy Farmyard is next door, with an entrance into the petting zoo from the secure garden. It is definitely worth a visit with the kids. The breakfast menu is simple but delicious.

Klein Joostenberg Bistro

Klein Joostenberg Bistro situated on the Joostenberg Farm is a lovely, relaxed family restaurant serving simple, good food inspired from traditional French bistro cuisine. It is set in beautiful landscaped gardens with a jungle gym on the lawn space in front of the restaurant and lots of space for the kids to run and play.

Attached to the restaurant is the Joostenberg Deli where you can shop for a variety of products from organic produce, free range meats and eggs, fruits and vegetables, cheeses, home cooked meals, Joostenberg wines and tasty treats. For the little ones horse and cart rides are available on the weekends for R15/person.

Mont Marie

One of my favourite restaurants is the exquisite Mont Marie in Stellenbosch. This lovely, child friendly restaurant was an absolute gem to discover and definitely worth a visit. It’s rare to find such a stylish child friendly restaurant.

Set in the picturesque Blaauwklippen Valley surrounded by vineyards and mountains, the restaurant overlooks a dam. From the moment you arrive you will feel the magnificence of this outstanding venue. There is a relaxed atmosphere to this superb, modern fine dining restaurant serving delicious, well presented gourmet food.

They have an amazing enclosed kids play area. It is beautifully set up with wooden swings, jungle gyms and a sandpit with sand toys. This is not your usual play area with great attention to detail and even a custom built secure wooden swing for babies. You can feel the extra care and thought that has been put in in the design of the play area to blend in with the surrounding area and it is nice to know they care about families and our little people. There are dining tables inside the play area as well so you can keep an eye on your little ones and they even have adorable wooden kiddies tables. The high chairs are in condition and are good quality. I highly recommend booking. Request a table in the kids play area.
