Bistro 13, located in the Stellenbosch Winelands, is a fabulous child-friendly restaurant serving delicious food in a relaxed ambiance with a lovely garden for kids to play in. There are two natural wood dream catcher jungle gyms nestled under shady trees and plenty of space for kids to run, play and kick a ball.
The restaurant is located on the Stellenbosch Vineyards Estate, also known as Welmoed Winery, on Baden Powell Drive, a short distance from the N2 and has a somewhat industrial approach but do not let this deter you from the delightful culinary experience that awaits at this relaxed eatery.
There is seating inside and out on a lovely wooden deck with views of the garden and a pond with ducks. The interior décor is elegant and understated with the use of light, earthy tones creating a fresh contemporary appeal with a comfortable warmth.
Chef Nic van Wyk has a wealth of knowledge in the culinary world and is very well respected having worked in successful restaurants like Terroir and La Colombe. Chef Nic’s relaxed approached to food led him to open his own Bistro where he creates seasonal menus of simple but delicious flavoursome food at affordable prices. Expect to find classically prepared dishes with familiar South African flavours. To enhance and complement Nic’s meals a selection of estate wines from the Stellenbosch Vineyards collection is available to pair with your meal. The tasting room is located next to the bistro, in the same building.
On arrival we where welcomed with a delicious glass of the Welmoed Sparkling Wine which is a sparkling Pinot Grigio. For starters we shared the Cured, smoked and fresh Trout, sauce vierge, lavashe biscuits and, my favourite, crumbed Goat’s Cheese served with pickled beetroot, watercress and a balsamic citrus dressing. Both delicious and perfectly paired with the Credo Chenin Blanc 2014.
In between starters and main we tasted the Infiniti Brut which I loved! For mains we shared the Roasted chicken breast served with root vegetable pave, green beans, dill, honey and mustard sauce and the Grilled Linefish with mashed potato, spring peas, brown butter pancetta vinaigrette…again, delicious, wholesome food, well presented, bursting with flavour and portion sizes are ideal. Our main course was perfectly paired with the Welmoed Unwooded Chardonnay.
I love strawberries so dessert was an obvious choice, I chose the Strawberry gratin with vanilla ice cream and my friend, the chocolate lover, chose the Chocolate and banana mousse with caramel crunch biscuit, dark chocolate ice cream and a delicious rum custard. Dessert was delicious and perfectly paired with the Infiniti Noble Late Harvest.
The meal was absolutely delicious, perfectly paired with estate wines to compliment the meal and enhance the flavours. The kids did not join me this time but the restaurant is ideal for families with kids of all ages as you can sit on the deck while the kids play in the garden. There is a Munchkins menu for kids under 12.
This was a wonderful dining experience, the service was efficient, the restaurant has a wonderful ambiance, the meal was outstanding and the wine delicious! The portions are generous and the prices affordable. A great find for parents looking for quality. I highly recommend this restaurant to families (and those without kids of course!) An excellent culinary experience in a child friendly environment is rare to find! This is a winner.
Thank you Bistro 13 for a delightful dining experience.
