Situated in a quiet suburban road in Rondebosch, Brooklands House Guesthouse is owned by Sandra and Philip Engelen, a British couple who have lived in South Africa for many years. Their experience in the hospitality industry is evident with their attention to detail in the beautifully decorated and maintained guesthouse. Personalised services on offer include airport transfers, travel cots for small children, Cape Peninsular and wine tours for families and small groups with an accredited tour guide. The property has plenty of safe parking and appropriate security. All bedrooms have satellite TV, a fridge, kettle and complementary tea/coffee. Locals are also welcome to come for breakfast at a cost of R135pp and a good selection of cold buffet and hot food is on offer.
The main house has four en-suite double bedrooms. Attached to the main house is a separate two-bedroom family unit, which can sleep four people and has a bathroom. Sandra and Philip live next door leaving the guesthouse exclusively for the use of guests. What makes Brooklands House particularly appealing for larger families or groups visiting Cape Town is that you can rent the whole property as self-catering accommodation.
The garden has a lovely swimming pool and a swing hangs from a majestic tree providing ample shade. The lawn is expansive – perfect for keeping children busy in the beautiful South African weather. There are outdoor braai (barbeque) facilities and I particularly like the little Shiraz vineyard in the corner of the garden that Philip makes his own wine from.
The guesthouse has a very peaceful feel to it. My favourite room in the house is the sunroom, or conservatory, as it would be known in England. Elegantly decorated in hues of summer flowers with oldy-worldy touches, the room is bathed in sunshine and its large windows and French doors leave you feeling part of the garden.
Brooklands House is the kind of place you can easily call a home away from home, even more so with the owners’ willingness to consider families’ budgets, upon request and within reason.
