Middelvlei Wine Estate is run by the Momberg family, inviting you to join them for a traditional South African boerebraai experience. The farm, with a true rustic South African vibe, is very welcoming to families with plenty of entertainment for kids (and mom and dad!)
My family and I had the most amazing day at Middelvlei Wine Estate. Arriving at the Estate, not knowing what to expect, it was one of the most memorable family outings full of surprises and entertainment. This is the only farm I know of that offers this truly South African traditional experience, on a wine farm in Stellenbosch. The perfect outing for families and tourists, alike.
On arrival, my little animal lover spotted the farm animals so this was first on the itinerary. He absolutely adores all animals and was delighted to feed the goats, pigs and chickens. The farm has beautiful dogs too which my boys fell in love with.
Next, the scooters and bikes got the kids attention and they were off zooming around so mom and dad could find their table. Then the kids were treated to a kid’s tasting and pairing. A true delight for all kids with lots of sweet treats to keep them entertained. It is an interactive experience, if they are old enough and interested, they can explore their senses, and can colour in too if they choose. Then it was time for the kids to enjoy some more of the fun games the farm offers like giant-size lawn Twister and Checkers and a huge sandpit, plus plenty of space to run wild.
While the kids were enjoying all the farm activities it gave us time to enjoy a Wine Blending Experience. This experience usually begins with a Cellar Tour and wine tasting to prepare for the blending, which will take approximately 30 minutes, but we decided to skip this as we had the kids with us. In our Wine Blending Basket, we had all the necessary components for the task. Our lovely host, Ben, explained the process and then left us to test our wine blending skills. We had Merlot, Pinotage and Shiraz and we had to decide in which percentages we were going to blend our very own bottle. This was great fun, hubby and I loved it. We tried four options and then mutually agreed on our favourite, winning blend of 70% Merlot, 20% Shiraz and 10% Pinotage.
Afterward this special experience the kids got to cork the bottle, which was so much for fun for our little ones, and a fantastic unique experience, we have never done this before ?
While we were blending our wine the kid’s braai snack boxes arrived and our starter, a traditional Potbrood and Snoek Pate. The kids snack box consisted of boerewors, potato faces, juice box and dried fruit.
On the boerebraai menu is a traditional selection of South African favourites including lamb chops, boerewors and honey and mustard chicken sosaties prepared to perfection, and an old favourite cheese, tomato and onion braaibroodjies! Also included are pumpkin fritters, green salad and a traditional potato salad, all served in the old style enamel dishes. It was truly delicious.
After our meal was one of my all time favourite braai things to do! Braaing marshmallows. YUM. While the kids mastered this skill mom and dad stood around the fire enjoying some farm style coffee.
There were even bubbles for the kids to blow.
It was an amazing afternoon at the farm, a wonderful family outing with the perfect balance of entertainment and relaxing. Plenty for kids to do, perfect to give mom and dad a little time to enjoy some of our favourite things…good food and wine 🙂
Thank you Middlevlei, you were perfect hosts and very accommodating to our busy kids, they had a ball and we had a wonderful time. Highly recommended to all.
