It is Summer holiday time! Time to get out and about in the sun in our beautiful city and play tourist. It is so much fun and there are so many amazing things to do in beautiful Cape Town, we are spoilt for choice! Here are some of my favourite fun, day outing ideas to do with the kids in the summer holidays in and around Cape Town.
1. Cape Peninsula Tour
Plan for a big day, start early and take a slow drive to Cape Point via Hout Bay. Stop at the Bay Harbour Markets (if it’s the weekend!). Drive back via Simon’s Town and visit the adorable African Penguin Colony at Boulders Beach.
2. Sightseeing in the City
Take the kids up Table Mountain on the Cableway and enjoy spectacular views of the BEST city in the world. Then head to Café Paradiso, an awesome family friendly café located in trendy Kloof Street in the CBD where the kids can make their own pizza or cookies while you enjoy a meal OR enjoy a meal at the lovely child-friendly Deer Park Café in Vredehoek and let the kids play in the Rocklands Road Park. Stroll through the Company’s Garden, laugh at the adorable squirrels and enjoy a meal at the child-friendly Company’s Garden Restaurant. (Please note the Planetarium, is CLOSED for maintenance).
3. Red City Sightseeing Bus
Take the kids for a scenic tour of Cape Town on the open top, double-decker red City Sightseeing Bus. There is great fun! There are 2 routes to choose from both departing outside the Aquarium at the V&A Waterfront. The Red Route goes via Camps Bay and the Blue Route via Kirstenbosch Gardens. Plan your route ahead of time and either enjoy a stop at Camps Bay beach or explore the magnificent Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.
4. Mouille Point
Ride on the iconic Blue Train and let the kids run wild in the huge play park, play a game of Putt-Putt on the Promenade and visit the wonderful Green Point Urban Park with two separate play areas for different age groups. Pack in the bikes and let the kids ride along the Promenade. Stop by The Creamery off Beach Road and
indulge in some delicious, natural ice cream.
5. Beach Day
Well its Summer Time, and time for Sun, Sea, Sand, Sandcastles and Ice Cream! Yay 🙂 Nothing beats a day at the beach with the kids and we are spoilt for choice! Some of my favourite child friendly beaches are Boulders Beach, St James, Clifton 4th and Camps Bay. If you are heading to Muizenberg take the coastal walkway to St. James.
6. A Day at the V&A Waterfront
Enjoy the Holiday Entertainment Programme for kids at the V&A from the Petting Zoo, Zip Zap Circus, Pump Track to meeting Santa in his workshop. Take the kids out to sea on the Jolly Roger Pirate Boat, it is hugely popular, ride on the Cape Wheel, let the kids play in one of the play areas located outside the V&A Shopping Wharf and Clock Tower precinct. Visit the Two Oceans Aquarium and watch a puppet show on three times a day at 10:30am, 1:30pm or 4pm. Take the kids on a harbour cruise on the City Sightseeing Boat, departs from the jetty outside the Aquarium every 20 minutes.
7. Watch a Show at the Artscape
Annie, Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs, and Peter Pan & Tinkerbell are showing at the Artscape in the Summer holidays.
8. Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens
Discover the magnificent Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, the perfect place for kids to learn and experience the best of nature. Walk on the Tree Canopy Walkway and see the life-sized Dinosaur sculptures made from tin; dine at child-friendly Moyo which has a lovely play area for the little ones, or bring your own picnic.
9. Gourmet Picnics in the Winelands
Gourmet Picnics are a wonderful way to spend the day with family and friends, and wonderful for celebrations too. It’s relaxing, the food is delicious, the wine outstanding, the location scenic, and of course it is ideal with kids. Remember you need to book in advance! Read my article here for ideas and reviews.
10. Market Day
Visit the lively, child friendly Root 44 Markets in the Stellenbosch Winelands every Saturday and Sunday from 10am – 4pm; or the Sunday Family Market at Blaauwklippen Estate, on every Sunday 10am – 3pm with lots of entertainment for kids; or the Lourensford Harvest Market on Sunday 10am – 3pm or the Market @ Vergenoegd on Saturday 9am – 4pm. 11. Spier Wine Estate
Let the kids enjoy some Grape juice tasting while mom and dad wine taste; then visit Eagle Encounters on the estate; for lunch enjoy a Gourmet Picnic around the Spier dam with views of the Helderberg mountains which provide the perfect setting. There are plenty of trees for shade as well as a jungle gym to keep the little ones busy. Picnics can be pre-ordered or purchased from Eight To Go Deli.

13. Hout Bay Outings
Visit World of Birds and enjoy a meal at Dunes Restaurant, a lovely seaside restaurant which has a play area in sand, take the kids on a Seal Island Tour departing from the Hout Bay Harbour or visit the Clay Café in Hout Bay where the kids can paint their own ceramics.
14. Thrilling Rides and Water Slides
Choose from Ratanga Junction at Century City; Bugz Playpark in Joostenberg Vlakte, open daily 9am – 5pm or Cool Runnings Toboggan Park in Tygervalley, an outdoor Toboggan ride, the only one in Africa!
Water parks Waterworld at the Strand or Graceland in Paarl are the perfect way to cool down in the hot summer sun.
15. Imhoff Farm
Enjoy a meal at the lovely child friendly Blue Water Café where kids can play in a secure garden and treehouse and visit the petting zoo Higgledy Piggeldy Farmyard.
16. Stellenbosch Winelands
Visit Giraffe House Wildlife Awareness Centre open 7 days a week from 9am – 5pm; for lunch head to Weltevreden Wine Estate and let the kids play at Carnival.
Visit the exquisite, child friendly Mont Marie with a lovely play area for kids or the the charming Tokara Delicatessen.
17. Paarl Winelands
Visit the Drakenstein Lion Park and Chimp Haven, a sanctuary for rescued lions, then for lunch head to La Grapperia at the Spice Route for delicious pizza and spoil the kids with ice cream for DV Artisan.
Spend a day exploring at Laborie Wine Estate, kids can enjoy grape juice tasting at Taste, and pizzas or for a contemporary menu enjoy a meal at the child-friendly Harvest at Laborie
The Science Centre is a brilliant way for kids to experience Science in an entertaining and educational environment with over 250 hands-on exhibits and mind-boggling puzzles. There is so much to see and do your kids will be kept busy for hours having fun while being in a learning environment and they run a holiday entertainment program.
19. Franschhoek Valley
Leopard’s Leap is a fantastic restaurant for a family lunch or enjoy a day on the Franschhoek Wine Tram, OK, this is a little more for the adults, but also great fun for kids. Read my article for full details.
20. Helderberg Wine Region in Somerset West
Lourensford Estate is a great family outing to this estate, let the kids join in on some wine tasting with a grape juice tasting and enjoy a meal at the lovely, child-friendly Millhouse Kitchen. If it’s Sunday visit the Lourensford Harvest Market.
